A Podcast Series Timeline: From Concept to Completion
The Work: For each of the podcast series I wrote and hosted, I worked with researchers, parent coaches, psychologists, professors, and other experts who knew more than I did about the science and pyschology behind the chosen topics. This required hours and hours of interviews, a lot of late-night reading, and several script iterations. And some recording and re-recording. Becuase, you know—technology glitches.
The Skills: Writing, Interviewing, Editing and Recording. These were the four main skills I tapped into as a writer and host of my own series. When I was editing other series, I wore the hat of a creative strategist and editor. We produced close to 50 podcast series from topics like picky eating and potty training to gender identity, bullying and co-parenting (I did that one!). You can give the series I hosted a listen below.
The Goal: Parent Lab was a startup that offered parents science-based education through an app in language they could understand. My job was to turn PhD-level content into accessible, practical advice. Ultimately, our goal was to help parents wade through the murky waters of raising kids in a way that gave them confidence and peace of mind. Because, you know—science.
The Creative Challenge: My challenge was to not only edit other hosts’ scripts for flow, understandability and overall appeal (do parents really want to hear about this/care about this?), but to write and record my own podcast series (below). I was also the marketing copywriter, the UX writer for the app, the social media consultant, and the blog editor. Whew! Life at a startup, am I right?
